Sacrifice has always been a major motif in the eucharistic theology of the Roman Catholic Church, primarily because the mass is believed to be a propitiatory, not merely a commemorative, sacrifice.89 The Reformation creeds clearly rejected the concept that the Lord’s Supper is a propitiatory sacrifice.90 Some Protestants are prepared to call the Lord’s Supper a sacrifice in the sense of a “sacrifice of praise and prayer”91 or in the sense of a sacrifice of “ ‘self-devotion’ of the individual
